I was privileged to have been invited to join several members of Green Gym this morning on a dawn chorus walk, beginning with a cup of tea at All Saints Church at 5am....delicious!
We enjoyed a gentle walk along the old railway line that runs down the eastern edge of the Western Yar Estuary and saw or heard the following (in the approximate order of appearance): Jackdaw, Pheasant, Carrion Crow, Great Tit, Chaffinch, Robin, Wood Pigeon, Blackbird, Rook, Greenfinch, Blackcap, Wren, Chiff Chaff, Blue Tit, Reed Warbler, Mallard, Shelduck, Sedge Warbler, Black-headed Gull, Chiff Chaff, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Long-tailed Tit, Collared Dove, Dunnock, Herring Gull, Chaffinch, Common Whitethroat, Little Egret, Green Woodpecker, Cetti's Warbler, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Mute Swan, Oystercatcher, Jay, Brent Goose, Magpie, House Martin, Kestrel, Moorhen, Swift, House Sparrow & Starling. With a wildlife assembly to lead at the local school, I left the others at Yarmouth and picked up Cormorant and Song Thrush on the way back.
The others should have seen Swallow & Sand Martin further up, so I reckon that's nearly 50 species. Not bad, but it's worrying that we didn't hear a Cuckoo.
The sun's shining so I'm looking forward to a bit more invertebrate activity. Here's a few moths from the last few days:
I love the subtle colour tones of this Pebble Prominent.
And this is a beautiful male Muslin Moth.
Finally, here's a Green-veined White at Afton Marsh amply demonstrating why it's called what it is!!
