Watching City beat United yesterday evening was exciting......
....and so was coming across my first dragonfly of the year. Well, damselfly: a Large Red Damselfly, one of 3 at Afton Marsh. Not long now before the sky is filled with the wonderful whirring of dragonfly wings!!
And the number of hoverfly species is starting to climb rapidly. This is the handsome Leucozona lucorum.
And this is Ferdinandea cuprea with its brassy abdomen. The wing blotches and other markings make it hard to see in the dappled light of the woodlands and scrub it loves....but it doesn't work when the subject is sitting on a dandelion head!
